Welcome to the wiki for SASP Physics at the Science Learning Centre South West.
Assignment Results.
I know you're all eager to get your results. The scripts have been marked, we've had the second marking meeting and now the scripts will be scrutinised by an external examiner. There will then be an extraordinary meeting (I know) of the examination board and your results will be ratified. At that point, they become official and I will send each of you an e-mail with your result and a feedback sheet from your assignment.
Ratification should take place on the 24th October or thereabouts, unless there is a hold up with the external examiner. However it works out, you should have your results by the end of the month.
Neil.
Congratulations to all of you on completing the course. It's been a brilliant year for me; thanks to you all for the laughs, the great ideas and for the gifts. How well you've got to know me...
Please stay in touch, keep updating this site and making it more and more useful and let's hear your success stories in teaching physics.
Good luck with the assignments, let me know if you need any help and have a fantastic, relaxing summer. You deserve it.
"Physics is like sex - sure, it may have some practical results but that's not why we do it." - Feynman (who else?)
Awesome mug. Thank you.
Neil.

Dear All,
Congratulations on getting through the SASP Physics course! Please find attached the photographs of you all taken today.
Best wishes,

Dear All,
Please note that the budget for evening meal costs for those staying at the Ibis this week is up to £15, an expense form is attached. Receipts will need to be attached. Please also note that this is for evening meal costs only and should not be used to cover alcohol.
We look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
Best wishes,
Fiona
Baby news!
Congratulations to John on the birth of Eden Marlene Packham last Friday. She weighed in at a healthy 9lbs. I'm sure you'll all join me in wishing the family all the best.
HiSparc page updated
I have updated the HiSparc page. Please have a look. If you are interested please do get in touch. You and your school do not have to be in Bristol as long as it is in the South West. Next tuesday I will be in my office (4.48 in the HH Wills Physics Laboratory; same building as where your next session takes place). Just drop in if you have a question or remark.
University of Bristol Library Access
Dear All,
I heard yesterday that some of you have had problems trying to borrow books from the University of Bristol library. The SASP Project Manager at the National Science Learning Centre has now spoken to Jenny Fifken at the Arts and Social Science Library who will make up library cards for you all as long as you provide her with a passport style photograph. I hope this will solve all the problems, please note that you do not need a library card if you just want to access the library and use the books as reference but you will if you want to borrow anything. Details of how to get to this library can be found by clicking here
Please contact me if there are any further issues.
Best wishes,
Fiona Wherlock

Final summative assignment - important.
I've now completed the training on marking and administering assignments and can provide more effective support for your final assignment.
Over the next two weeks I'd like you to complete this form:
it should help you to plan your work more effectively and will help me to keep track of what you're doing so that I can provide the right guidance.
Please see the updated 'Assignments' page for more support.
Dear All,
You may be interested to know that you are able to gain access to local University Libraries to assist you with the SASP course.
This can be arranged by completing the attached SCONUL form and returning it to me. I will then collate everyone's forms and send them to the National Centre where they will create access cards for you all. One the National Centre has the forms, it can take up to a month to produce the cards so please ensure you complete and return the form to me urgently. You might all like to take 5 mins in the next session to do this.
Please note that the Library/ID number is your University of York username eg abc123.
Please let me know if you have any queries.
Best wishes,
Fiona
The maths page Has been updated with a note about extra maths sessions, please read and respond.
I've added a few more resources, including a brief explanation of how you work out the angles and the in- and downslope components of weight for an object on a slope for those of you that were a little baffled.
Opportunity corner: At-Bristol are developing a new suite of exhibition and educational material based on Earth science themes. They're keen to work with experienced teachers who have in-depth knowledge of themes like Earth Science, Oceanography, Atmospheric Science and the like to identify key ideas, common misconceptions, difficult teaching points and anything else that can inform and enrich the programme. If you have an hour or so to spare and you'd be willing to share your expertise then please contact Helen Featherstone (helen.featherstone@at-bristol.org.uk) and your contributions would be warmly welcomed.
By popular request, here's an updated timetable with venues:
IMPORTANT: There is an amendment to the SASP handbook regarding the final, summative assessment. Please download the linked document and add it to your handbook.
What is this site for?
This site will serve as a central point for resources and information and as a forum for support discussion and development of ideas.
As we complete the days I will write them up and link them to the Course by day page. Please contribute to those pages with any resources, questions or comments that you feel will be useful to the group.
This is your wiki. The power of wikis comes from the level of interaction and engagement. Use the discussion tabs to refine your ideas about physics and science teaching. Develop and share collaborative resources. Support each others' learning and find ways to work together. With twenty people contributing to this resource it will become very powerful very quickly.
I am deeply indebted to James de Winter, physicist extraordinare and SASP tutor for the East of England, for allowing me to lift large chunks of the wiki that he lovingly developed for his course over a year and simply paste them here.
If you have never worked on a wiki site before, there is some excellent teach-yourself guidance in the TSSP e-Learning material. I've included a few documents to help newcomers start using wikis.
If you know vaguely what a wiki is but you have questions about best practice, there's lots of web guidance on wiki etiquette - take a look at one example on Netbeans or do a web search.
If you're wiki literate and itching to get going, please take a few minutes to check out the house rules.
